The News with Jorge Gestoso

teleSUR English Poscast

Hello, I’m Jorge Getoso. On today’s podcast:

1. Brazil has officially recognized Dilma Rousseff as a victim of the military dictatorship. In 1970, she was imprisoned and tortured for three years. Although she filed for reparations in 2002, her case was blocked under Jair Bolsonaro’s government, who publicly denied the torture. Rousseff now heads the BRICS Development Bank, while Bolsonaro faces trial that could result in over 40 years in prison for attempting to discredit President Lula.

2.  In Panama, protests continue to escalate into an indefinite strike in response to neoliberal reforms, the economic crisis, and the high cost of living. Protesters are demanding economic sovereignty and environmental justice. In recent days, reports have surfaced of increased arbitrary arrests and growing state repression.

3.  And in Venezuela, the electoral silence period has begun ahead of the regional and legislative elections scheduled for this Saturday. During this time, candidates are prohibited from campaigning.
