This Wednesday, negotiations for phase two of the cease-fire in Gaza formally begin in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The talks will focus on the further withdrawal of Israeli forces, the disarmament of Hamas, and guarantees for a Palestinian state, although tensions persist over postwar control and the return of hostages who died in captivity.

The United States has carried out a new military operation in international waters of the Caribbean, near the coast of Venezuela, sinking a speedboat it described as suspicious of drug trafficking and killing the six men on board, whom it labeled narco-terrorists. The Venezuelan government responded with a strong condemnation, denouncing the attack as, quote, an imperialist aggression, end quote, and a violation of national sovereignty aimed at destabilizing the country.

And in Ecuador, the explosion of a car bomb caused one death and around thirty injuries in Guayaquil — the second car bomb to strike the country’s most populated city in less than a month. Meanwhile, an Indigenous leader injured by police forces in the province of Imbabura, in the north of the country, is in critical condition and fighting for his life, as a national strike against the neoliberal government of Daniel Noboa continues.
