And the United Arab Emirates withdraws from OPEC starting May 1st, organization it joined seven years after its beginning, founded in 1960 by Venezuela, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
They cite strategic reasons, such as a crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, and their intention to produce without quotas, a decision that in the short term could lead to an increase in oil prices, but in the long term could lower them as the U.S. seeks and weaken OPEC's ability to influence the global energy market.
