Authorities report that 40% of Pereira suffered serious infrastructure damage, particularly to buildings and homes. And the far right pro US president, de La Hayes Prieja, while visiting visiting Buenaventura amid the tragedy, sparked widespread outrage and criticism when, as a form of aid, he threw soccer balls bearing his personal logo from his armored vehicle to children. The incident adds to another controversy after he initially denied entry to Mexican rescue workers, but immediately allowed rescuers from Israel and The United States to enter, prompting accusations that humanitarian aid was being politicized.
